Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Impact
Guardians of Paradise: Our Pledge to Flores
At Flores Honeymoon, we believe that we are temporary guests in an ancient land of extraordinary natural beauty and cultural richness. Our philosophy is rooted in the principle of ‘guardianship’—a profound responsibility to protect the pristine ecosystems and vibrant communities of Flores for generations to come. Sustainability is not an add-on to our business; it is woven into the very fabric of every honeymoon we design. We are committed to ensuring that our presence is a positive force, contributing to conservation and empowering local people.
Environmental Commitments: Preserving a Pristine World
We implement tangible policies to minimize our environmental footprint and actively support the conservation of Flores’s unique biodiversity.
- Carbon Neutral Journeys: We calculate the total carbon footprint of each client’s journey—including international and domestic flights, yacht fuel, and land transport—and invest in certified carbon offset projects, such as the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve in Borneo, to render every trip 100% carbon neutral.
- Active Marine Conservation: A percentage of our revenue is directly donated to our partners at the Komodo Survival Program and The Nature Conservancy Indonesia. On our tours, we enforce strict no-touch/no-feed policies for all marine life, use only reef-safe sunscreens, and educate our guests on responsible snorkeling and diving practices within the Komodo National Park.
- Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy: All our tours—both on land and at sea—are free of single-use plastics. We provide guests with reusable water bottles and work exclusively with partners who have robust water filtration systems and effective waste management protocols, a key criterion in our methodology.
- Advocacy for Responsible Tourism: We work closely with the Komodo National Park Authority to support their conservation goals, including adherence to visitor quotas and designated marine zones, helping to mitigate the impact of tourism on fragile sites like Padar Island and Pink Beach.
Community Empowerment: Investing in People
Our commitment extends to the wonderful people who call Flores home. We believe that sustainable tourism must provide direct, tangible benefits to local communities.
- Local Employment & Fair Wages: Over 90% of our on-the-ground team, from our certified guides to our boat crews and drivers, are hired from local Flores communities. We are proud to be a living wage employer, providing salaries and benefits (including BPJS health and social security) that far exceed the regional minimums.
- Direct Partnership with Communities: For cultural experiences like the visit to Wae Rebo, we partner directly with the village’s own tourism cooperative (Pokdarwis). This ensures that the majority of the revenue flows directly to the community for their collective benefit, rather than to outside operators.
- Championing Local Artisans & Producers: We facilitate ethical and respectful opportunities for our clients to engage with and purchase from local artisans, such as the traditional Ikat weavers in the Sikka regency or coffee farmers near Bajawa. We ensure a fair price is paid directly to the creator.
- Local Sourcing: Whenever possible, the produce and supplies for our private yacht catering and land-based meals are sourced from local markets and organic farms in and around Labuan Bajo, supporting the local agricultural economy.
A journey with Flores Honeymoon is an investment in the future of this incredible island. It is a partnership with us, and with the people of Flores, to ensure this paradise thrives.

Protecting Flores’ unparalleled biodiversity: From reef to rainforest
Imagine slipping beneath the surface into a kaleidoscope of living coral, where schools of iridescent fish dance around giant manta rays gliding gracefully through crystal-clear waters. This is the marine realm of Flores, a true global treasure, and its preservation is paramount to our mission. Our commitment extends deeply into safeguarding these pristine underwater ecosystems, particularly within the world-renowned Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991. We partner with local marine conservationists to monitor reef health, participate in clean-up initiatives, and strictly enforce responsible diving and snorkeling practices. This includes advocating for reef-safe sunscreen, maintaining respectful distances from marine life, and ensuring our boats adhere to no-anchor zones to protect delicate coral formations. By doing so, we help ensure that future generations of honeymooners can witness the breathtaking spectacle of over 100 species of coral and more than 1,000 species of fish that call these waters home.
Beyond the vibrant coral gardens, Flores rises into a dramatic landscape of volcanic peaks, dense rainforests, and savannahs, each harboring its own unique biodiversity. While famous for its Komodo dragons, the island is also home to an array of endemic birds, reptiles, and fascinating flora. We design our land-based excursions with the utmost respect for these terrestrial habitats. Our guides are trained in low-impact trekking techniques, ensuring trails are preserved and wildlife is undisturbed. We implement rigorous waste management protocols across all our operations, significantly reducing single-use plastics by providing reusable water bottles and encouraging guests to minimize their footprint. Every aspect, from the vehicles we use to the accommodations we select, is vetted for its commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring that your journey through Flores leaves only positive traces.
Our dedication to the environment extends to active participation in local conservation efforts. We contribute to reforestation projects in areas affected by past deforestation, helping to restore vital habitats and mitigate erosion. Furthermore, we support educational programs in local schools, teaching the younger generation about the importance of their natural heritage and sustainable practices. We believe that true guardianship means investing in the long-term health of the ecosystem, fostering a sense of responsibility not just within our team, but also among our guests and the communities we engage with. This holistic approach ensures that the spectacular natural beauty of Flores, from its deepest reefs to its highest peaks, remains an untouched paradise.
Empowering Flores’ vibrant communities through authentic engagement
The soul of Flores resides in its people, their rich culture, and their time-honored traditions. At Flores Honeymoon, our sustainability philosophy is deeply intertwined with empowering these vibrant communities, fostering economic growth, and preserving cultural heritage. We believe that a truly luxurious and authentic experience is one that directly benefits the local population. This commitment begins with direct employment: over 90% of our operational staff, including skilled guides, drivers, and hospitality professionals, are proud locals from Flores. We provide fair wages, comprehensive training, and opportunities for career advancement, ensuring that tourism directly translates into improved livelihoods and economic stability for families across the island.
Our commitment extends to fostering a robust local economy through ethical sourcing. We prioritize partnerships with local farmers, fishermen, and artisans, ensuring that the fresh, organic produce on your plate, the exquisite coffee in your cup, and the intricate ikat textiles you admire are all sourced directly from Flores. The traditional ikat weaving, for instance, is a painstaking art form that can take weeks or even months to complete a single piece. By purchasing directly from these artisans, we help preserve this vital cultural practice and provide a sustainable income for weavers and their families. Our itineraries often include respectful visits to traditional villages, offering guests an immersive glimpse into daily life, traditional ceremonies, and the opportunity to interact directly with the friendly Manggarai or Ngada people, fostering genuine cross-cultural understanding.
Beyond direct economic impact, we are dedicated to supporting community development initiatives that address local needs. We invest in projects focused on improving access to education and healthcare, understanding that a thriving community is the bedrock of sustainable tourism. Through our partnerships, we contribute to infrastructure improvements like clean water access and sanitation facilities in remote villages. Our approach is not just about providing jobs; it’s about building long-term relationships and fostering a sense of shared prosperity. We believe that by empowering the people of Flores, we not only enhance their quality of life but also enrich the authentic experiences we offer to our cherished guests, creating a cycle of positive impact that resonates far beyond a single journey.
